From the House of the Dead
Sat Mar 20 at 1 pm
Based on Dostoyevsky’s novel, Janáček’s powerful and moving opera, From the House of the Dead, is a compassionate examination of truthfulness and sincerity. In spite of its less than favorable setting — a prison where free will is systematically suppressed and the inhabitants’ souls are daily excised — hope triumphs in the form of a majestic eagle, the celebration of Easter, and the resolve of the inmates heard in their singing at the opera’s end. Music by Leoš Janáček. Conductor: Esa-Pekka Salonen. Cast: Stefan Margita, Kurt Streit, Peter Hoare, Peter Mattei, Willard White
