Mountain Stage brings FestivALL to a close.

 Permanent link

We had a wonderful evening at last night's Mountain Stage recording at the Clay Center. We brought an immensely successful FestivALL 2008 to a close with a stellar line-up featuring Jakob Dylan and the Gold Mountain Rebels, some whiskey flavored wisdom of Hayes Carll, the captivating Priscilla Ahn from Los Angeles, Nashville pop from Andy Davis and the enchanting voice of Krista Detor. Our crowd was warm and welcoming as always and many of them went home with a taste for something new. That's the stuff we like.

As always we continue to look ahead. We are making a long awaited return to our home at the Cultural Center Theater in Charleston on July 27th. Amos Lee, a major factor in launching the career of Priscilla Ahn, makes his second appearance on the show, along with neo-blues man Papa Mali, SteelDrivers and Sharon Little (who is busy opening for Krauss & Plant these days). Tickets are available online here, at Taylor Books in downtown Charleston or by calling 1-800-594-TIXX.

Our biggest thanks go out to all of those who came out to the show last night. You'll be able to hear yourselves over the radio the last weekend of July. Check for a station in your area here.

Kathy Mattea Show Archived

A Mountain Stage podcast of our show featuring WV girl-done-good Kathy Mattea, along with slide guitar hero Sonny Landreth (also performing as part of FestivALL Charleston), Tift Merritt, Tim O'Brien (another proud West Virginian) and Abigail Washburn and the Sparrow Quartet.

Originally recorded March 30th, 2008 at the beautiful historic Paramount Arts Center in Ashland, KY, this show was special even beyond the star-studded line-up of artists. Mattea, whose folks were raised in coal camps where their parents worked, debuted material from her latest CD, out now, entitled "Coal." Mattea has always had a knack for choosing appropriate material for her voice and this time was no exception. She dusted off some coal tunes by the likes of Hazel Dickens, Billy Edd Wheeler, Jean Ritchie and Utah Phillips and made them her own. On this episode of Mountain Stage she performed "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive," "Green Rolling Hills," "Red Winged Blackbird," and a stirring, a capella reading of  Dickens' "Black Lung."

One of the most unique things about Mountain Stage is the finale song, where guest artists are invited back to the stage for an "all-skate" number to bring the show to a close. Often times the finale is used for fading out the end of the radio show. This time, however, you get every note.

Not only was the band top notch (featuring solos from Sonny Landreth, Bill Cooley, Bela Fleck, Ben Sollee, Casey Driessen and Tim O'Brien and verses sung by Mattea, Washburn and O'Brien) but the material was fit for the occasion. Listen as Larry Groce tells the story behind Florence Reece's "Which Side Are You On," an emotionally charged labor-conflict song with a riviting performance by Larry Groce & Company- a real treat that you won't find anywhere else. Chances are you'll want to hear it twice. Click here to visit our archives and download the show.

We'd also like to thank those folks in Ashland and surrounding areas who came to the Paramount to see the show in person. We look forward to seeing you again someday.

Thanks for stopping by, and thanks for listening!

Mountain Stage and FestivALL Charleston

(Live Shows) Permanent link
This weekend Mountain Stage brings a very special Mountain Stage taping to the Clay Center for the arts and sciences  as part of the 4th Annual FestivALL Charleston.

Larry Groce, Mountain Stage's host and artistic director, also serves as the Exectutive Director for FestivALL, which began four years ago as an arts and culture showcase spanning four days. "All the Arts, All over Town," served as a fitting slogan.

This year it has expanded to 10 (!) days of public art, dance, theater and music. In its short life, FestivALL has gained valuable brand recognition and groups from all over the state have approached us about getting involved. Three short years ago, Mountain Stage celebrated it's 600th show with an appearance by Nickel Creek. This year we have a star studded Americana style show to mark our 675th taping (does anyone use tape anymore?). Jakob Dylan, of Wallflowers and, well, DYLAN fame, is bringing his new band the Gold Mountain Rebels to the show for a sampling of his upcoming solo record "Seeing Things," produced by Rick Rubin. Click here  for more on the show.

Tickets are still on sale here for those of you in the Charleston, WV area. Out there in radio-land, you'll be able to hear the show the last weekend of July. Click Here  for a list of stations and airtimes for Mountain Stage in your area.

Into the Blogosphere

(Live Shows) Permanent link
Hello there and Howdy!

It's been almost 25 years, 675 shows and some 1300+ hours of live music here at Mountain Stage and today we forge into the blogosphere.

We hope you'll keep checking back to our Web site, as we have some renovations in the works that we think will make your stay a little more informative and a lot more interactive. We also want your feedback on how you think we can improve.

Just like we say at the end of every radio show, without our listeners there would be no Mountain Stage. We love to hear from you. Now you can comment on this blog or drop an e-mail to Larry@mountainstage.org and we'll respond promptly. We may even post your question here (with your permission) so that everyone can see the answer.

We're going to do various things with this blog including periodic staff entries, special memories from our producers and hopefully post some occasional fan mail. We'll try to post pictures from our events that don't make it to the Web and discuss special moments you can listen for on this week's radio show.

So here's to you out there in radio land for keeping Mountain Stage alive. We hope you'll tell some of your like minded music loving friends about us, because we know you love your music and we know you like it LIVE!
